Your first week at work

The first few days of any job feel overwhelming. This is completely normal. Here is how to navigate them well — and make a strong first impression that stays with your employer.

📅
Day 1 — Arrive prepared
  • Arrive 10 minutes early. On your very first day, tardiness is unforgivable.
  • Bring all your documents in a clean folder — Aadhaar, certificate, photos, bank details.
  • Dress neatly and professionally — even if it is "just training day."
  • Greet everyone with a smile and "Good morning Sir/Madam."
  • Carry a pen and a small notebook to write down instructions.
👂
Day 1 — Listen more than you speak
  • Ask questions, but not too many at once. Write them down and ask when appropriate.
  • Do not volunteer opinions about how things "should" be done on your first day.
  • Observe how people communicate — formal or informal, English or Telugu?
  • Find out who your direct supervisor is and speak to them first for any need.
  • Thank your manager at the end of day one for welcoming you.
📋
First week — Understand the rules
  • Ask where to find the attendance register and how to mark your arrival.
  • Confirm exact working hours, break timings, and which day is your weekly off.
  • Ask how to request leave — through whom, with how much notice, and in which format.
  • Find out if there is a probation period and what is expected of you during it.
  • Ask about the uniform policy (if any) — make sure you comply from day two.
🤝
Building relationships
  • Learn your colleagues' names and use them — it builds trust quickly.
  • Offer to help when you see a colleague struggling — do not wait to be asked.
  • Do not get involved in office gossip or complaints, especially as a new employee.
  • Be respectful to everyone regardless of their position — peons and cleaning staff included.
  • Eat lunch with colleagues when possible — relationships built over food are strong ones.
💪
Performing your work
  • Always do your current task better than required — employers promote people who over-deliver.
  • If you finish a task early, do not sit idle — ask what you can do next.
  • Report problems to your supervisor immediately — never hide a mistake.
  • If you do not know how to do something, say "I am not sure — could you show me once?" Never guess and damage work.
  • Keep your workspace clean and organised at all times.
📱
Phone and personal conduct
  • Keep your phone on silent during working hours. Check messages only during break time.
  • Do not use the employer's wi-fi for personal browsing or social media.
  • Do not take photographs inside the workplace without permission.
  • Personal calls should be taken outside, briefly, and only for urgent matters.
  • Never speak negatively about your employer on social media — even privately.
⚠️ Common mistakes new employees make — and how to avoid them
  • ✕
Being late after day one. Punctuality is how employers measure reliability. One late arrival without a reason plants doubt that never fully disappears.
  • ✕
Taking too many sick days in the first 3 months. During probation, attendance is watched closely. If you are genuinely unwell, call in early and provide a medical certificate.
  • ✕
Saying "that was not my job." Freshers who refuse tasks outside their exact description are seen as difficult. In your first year, be willing to help wherever needed.
  • ✕
Leaving without notice. Even if the job is not right, give the required notice period. Leaving without notice means you will not get a reference letter — and in small industries, word travels fast.
  • ✕
Not following up on documents. Collect your offer letter, appointment letter, pay slips, and EPF UAN number within the first month. These are your rights and you will need them.
Questions to ask your manager in your first week
  • ?
"What does success look like in this role after 3 months?"
  • ?
"How and when will my performance be reviewed?"
  • ?
"Is there any training or upskilling support available?"
  • ?
"What is the best way to communicate urgent issues to you?"
  • ?
"What are the most important priorities for the team right now?"

How to read your pay slip

Your pay slip is a document your employer must give you every month. It shows exactly what you earned and what was deducted. Here is what each part means.

Important: PF and ESI deductions are NOT money lost — they are savings and insurance that protect you. See the EPF & ESI tab to understand exactly what you get from them.

EPF and ESI — what they are and why they matter

Many first-time employees see PF and ESI as "deductions" and feel cheated. In reality, they are the two most important financial benefits you will receive as an employee in India. Understanding them will change how you see them.

You and your employer each contribute 12% of your basic salary every month into a savings account in your name.
The government adds 8.15% annual interest on your total balance — higher than most bank savings accounts.
You can withdraw your EPF balance when you leave a job, retire, or in an emergency (housing, medical, education).
When you change jobs, you transfer your EPF balance — you do not lose it.
Applies to all companies with 20 or more employees and to employees earning below ₹15,000/month basic.
ESI — Employee State Insurance
Managed by ESIC (Government of India)
You pay 0.75% of gross salary; your employer pays 3.25%. Together this funds your medical insurance.
You and your entire family get FREE medical treatment at ESIC hospitals and dispensaries.
If you fall sick and cannot work, you receive 70% of your salary as sickness benefit for up to 91 days per year.
Maternity benefit: full salary for 26 weeks of maternity leave, paid by ESIC (not your employer).
Applies to companies with 10+ employees where gross salary is ₹21,000/month or less.
Who contributes what — for every ₹10,000 basic salary
EPF (Provident Fund) contribution per month
You ₹1,200
Employer ₹1,200
Your contribution (12%) Employer contribution (12%)

Every month ₹2,400 goes into your EPF account. After 5 years at this salary: approximately ₹1,70,000 in your account (with interest).

ESI contribution per month (on ₹10,000 gross salary)
₹75
Employer ₹325
Your contribution (0.75%) — ₹75 Employer contribution (3.25%) — ₹325

You pay ₹75 and your employer pays ₹325. For ₹75/month you get full family medical coverage and sick pay.

Getting and using your UAN number

1
Ask your employer for your UAN (Universal Account Number)
Your employer must give you your UAN within the first month of joining. The UAN is a 12-digit number linked to your EPF account for life. Keep it safe — it does not change even when you change jobs.
2
Activate your UAN on the EPFO portal
Go to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in → click "Activate UAN" → enter your UAN, Aadhaar, mobile number and date of birth. You will receive an OTP to activate. Once active, you can check your balance anytime.
3
Check your balance by SMS
Send an SMS: EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number. You will receive your latest balance by return SMS. No internet needed.
4
When you leave a job — transfer, do not withdraw
When you join a new employer, ask them to link your existing UAN. This transfers your old EPF balance to continue earning interest. Only withdraw your EPF if you are unemployed for 2 months or more — withdrawing loses the employer's contribution and the government interest if done too early.
ESI Hospital in Hyderabad: ESIC Model Hospital, Sanathnagar, Hyderabad — 040-23810801. Show your ESI card (or ESIC app) at any ESI dispensary for free OPD treatment for you and your family.

How to spot a job scam

Job scams target freshers specifically — because freshers are eager, less experienced, and often don't know what a real employer looks like. These red flags will protect you.

🚨
They ask you to pay any money — for registration, training, uniform deposit, ID card, or "processing fees." Real employers NEVER charge money to hire you. Any payment demand before or on the first day is a scam. Leave immediately.
🚨
The salary offered is shockingly high — ₹30,000–₹50,000/month for a fresher with no experience. No legitimate employer offers this to someone just out of vocational training. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
🚨
They contacted you without you applying — via unknown WhatsApp number, Instagram DM, or phone call. Genuine employers post jobs publicly or contact through placement centres. Unsolicited "job offers" from strangers are almost always fraudulent.
🚨
The job requires you to travel to another city before you have signed any papers or met the employer in person. Traffickers use fake job offers. Never travel to another city or state for a job without a written offer letter on company letterhead, confirmed independently.
🚨
They ask for your Aadhaar, bank account details, or OTP before you have joined or received an offer letter. Your Aadhaar and bank details can be misused for fraud. Never share OTPs with anyone — not even with someone claiming to be from a company.
🚨
The interview happens only on WhatsApp or Telegram — you never meet anyone in person or via verified video call. Most genuine employers conduct at least one in-person or verified video interview. Text-only "interviews" are a serious red flag.
🚨
They ask you to keep the "job offer" secret from your family. Any genuine employer is comfortable with you discussing the job with your parents or guardian. Secrecy is a manipulation tactic.

✓ What a real employer looks like

✅
They have a physical address you can visit before accepting. A real company has a real place — a factory, a clinic, a shop, an office. Visit and confirm before you commit.
✅
They give you a written offer letter on company letterhead with the salary, role, location, and joining date clearly stated. Verbal offers are not enough.
✅
They are comfortable with you taking time to decide and to show the offer to your family. Pressure to "decide right now" or "join today" is a red flag.
✅
They register you for EPF and ESI if they have 10+ employees — this is a legal requirement. An employer who refuses to register you is operating illegally.
✅
They pay salary on time, every month into your bank account with a pay slip. Cash-only payments with no record are often used to avoid legal obligations.
