Keeping Every Child
in School.
In Hyderabad, many children drop out of school, not because they can't learn, but because no one can help with homework, or because the family can no longer afford the fees. Our two programs for kids tackle both problems.
Asha Tuition Centres
After-school homework help for children whose parents can't help them with their studies.
The Need
Hyderabad has a large migrant population, and many parents work long hours or cannot read and write. Our research showed that their children were often the most likely to drop out of school, because no one at home could help them with their studies.
Our Response
The Asha Tuition Centres give these children somewhere to go for that help, encouraging them to stay in school and graduate successfully.
How Each Centre Works
- 25–30 children in each centre
- A well-qualified teacher at every centre
- Two hours every evening after school
- Help with homework and any course-related doubts and questions
Asha Back to School Program
School fee support for children at risk of dropping out after losing their father.
The Need
When a father dies, children are often pulled out of school. Their mothers usually cannot earn enough to keep them there, and the children drop out. In Hyderabad, fathers are lost to:
- Work-related accidents
- Terminal illness
- Suicide under mounting debt
- Extreme poverty
Our Response
The Asha Back to School Program finds these children and helps pay the school fees they need to stay in school, until their mother is able to support them herself.
- 1 Identify children at risk of dropping out after losing their father
- 2 Pay the school fees needed to keep them enrolled
- 3 Support them until their mother can provide for them herself
